This second leg of the Alternative Coast to Coast takes you across the last of the flat Fen country, from Shell Bridge to the bridge just east of Peakirk where the Wild Fowl trust has its HQ.

Car parking at the RV is just by the bridge where there is a convenient little area off the road.

From the start point at Shell Bridge continue West along the southern side of the South Holland main drain, remembering that this landscape can be dramatically lovely in its starkness on a sunny morning or bleak and unforgiving on a rainy windswept one! Be prepared.

At about four kilometres you will come to the sluice at Bridge House Farm (TF299156). Here you leave the drain and head south on the minor road that crosses the drain at this point. After another short walk the road turns sharp right to head due West to the main road junction at Brotherhouse Bar on the A1073 (TF261149).

Cross the main road and up on to the embankment of the “New River” (TF260149) which is on your right hand side as you walk southwest past Cloot House (TF247143), turning south at the bend (TF238138) towards Crowland. The River Welland winds its way north here towards Spalding and the Wash.

On the reaching the B1166 at Crowland turn right and after about 200m turn left onto the minor road heading south to pick up the embankment again at TF235100.

From here continue to follow the path on the embankment all the way back to the RV at Peakirk.
